Breathing Life into the Calls for Justice

The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) report Progress on Breathing Life into the Calls for Justice: A CFJ Report Card (June 2024) reviews five years of implementing the 231 Calls for Justice from the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. It finds moderate overall progress, but notes that government actions often reframe existing programs rather than address systemic racism and colonization. While legislative steps like the UNDRIP Act and Indigenous languages and child welfare bills are encouraging, areas such as Police Services, Health and Wellness, and Housing show little to no progress due to underfunding, mismanagement, and worsening overrepresentation in prisons. The report calls for rights-based, adequately funded action to ensure the safety and dignity of First Nations women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people.
