Honouring the Truth, Reconciling for the Future
The Final Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, titled Honouring the Truth, Reconciling for the Future, identifies the Indian Residential School system as a central part of Canada’s century-long policy of “cultural genocide,” intended to eliminate First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples as distinct cultural, social, and legal communities. More than 150,000 children were forcibly removed from their families and communities and placed in church-run schools, where they were separated from their languages and cultures and subjected to harsh discipline, neglect, widespread abuse, and high death rates. Drawing on thousands of Survivor testimonies, the report emphasizes that reconciliation is an essential responsibility for all Canadians. It calls for acknowledging the profound harm caused, addressing its roots, and building a renewed relationship grounded in mutual respect, with a shared commitment to ensuring this history is never forgotten.
